Trans-European and trans-continental trains run through Bulgaria with direct connections to Sofia from Paris, Vienna, Munich and Berlin. There are also frequent services from Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest, Thessaloniki and Istanbul. Border crossing by train can also be a long process with checks on passports and luggage often on both sides of the border. The State Railways connects the capital to the main towns. Reservations and first-class travel is advised, as are sleeper cars for night travel to more distant towns. Trains are cheap and run on time, albeit that some journeys are slow unless you catch an express service. http://www.bdz-rila.com/index-en.htm http://www.seat61.com/index.html
