There are four main international airports in Bulgaria. The largest, Sofia, sits to the east of the capital at about 15 – 20 minutes by road. It is well-serviced by buses and taxis, and the taxi company ‘OK’ are the preferred firm as advised by the airport authority. The airport has most of the facilities of a modern international airport, and the development of an extra runway and new terminal building are in progress. There are both direct and indirect flights to Sofia from a selection of UK airports. www.sofia-airport.bg Varna and Bourgas airports are both on the Black Sea coast, serving the east of the country. Varna airport lies just 9 km away from it’s namesake city and is operational throughout the year. It is under considerable pressure with increased volume of traffic, but modernisation is being planned. Bourgas airport to the south is situated 13 km from its city, but is not operational over the winter months. Both airports accept both international and domestic flights, and both are services by buses and taxis. http://www.varna-airport.bg/ http://www.bourgas-airport.com/en/index.htm The fourth airport in Bulgaria is at Plovdiv towards the southwest of the country. Its operational role is mainly to serve ski package charter flights over the winter months. http://www.plovdivairport.com/ Flying London to Sofia takes approximately 3 hours, with another ½ hour if flying to the coast. There is no departure tax except for US nationals. www.ba.com www.balkanair.co.uk Bulgaria Air and Hemus Air both operate convenient domestic flights between Sofia and Varna/Bourgas providing easy access to the east of the country.
