Country Information About Bulgaria

Bulgaria's terrain rises to 2,925m, and incorporates the Thracian and south Danubian plains as well as mountains and massifs including the Rila, Pirin, Rhodope and Stara Planina (Balkan) mountain ranges. Mountains are easily accessible, and the towns and villages have preserved the authentic Bulgarian spirit and hospitality. Heavy winter snowfalls are virtually guaranteed in the mountain ski resorts making them desirable winter sports locations. The diversity of landscape is remarkable, not only in the extreme summer and winter resorts, but also throughout the country, with sunflower meadows, fruit orchards, river valleys and shady wooded hillsides, all surrounded by an untamed terrain where one can walk without restraint.

Diversity can also be found in the rich mix of culture owing to Bulgaria’s historical background, from prehistoric finds, archaeological sites, ancient castles to historic monuments. However, two types of preserved history stand out to illustrate Bulgaria at its best: the 160 ancient monasteries (and hundreds more churches) dotted throughout the country are simply astounding, with many housing unique examples of Bulgarian iconography, woodcarving and paintings.  Rila Monastery in the south west is one of the finest.  In addition there are the architectural areas in many towns, as well as whole museum villages, depicting the National Revival Period, that have preserved the authentic nature with their wooden structures and overhanging upper floors.  Altogether Bulgaria boasts seven UNESCO world heritage sites, including Nessebar old town which, set out on a small peninsular on the Black Sea coast, is well worth a visit.

Bulgaria became a People’s Republic under Communist domination in 1946, and continued as such until the first multiparty election since World War II was held in 1990.  This began the contentious process of moving towards political democracy with a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime.  1996 saw the fall of the then socialist government, after which the country has seen strong growth and better stability, with governments committed to economic reform and responsible fiscal planning.  Bulgaria is committed to stamping out corruption and organised crime in its effort to join the EU, which, if these remedial measures are successful, could be as early as 2007.

Should medical aid be required, the UK has a reciprocal health agreement where, on production of a UK passport and NHS medical card, emergency hospital, medical and dental care will be provided for free. Charges are made for less urgent care, and prescribed medicines must be paid for.

Suits or smart casual wear is recommended for business meetings in Bulgaria and prior appointments are necessary.  Interpreters can be organised through tourist agencies. It is common for the visiting business person to offer hospitality to the contact in Bulgaria. Office hours:  Mon - Fri 0900 - 1730 Note: a nod of the head means ‘No’ and a shake means ‘Yes’!
